The challenge

Restoring Fire Compartmentation in a Live Hospital Environment Challenge Context During a major refurbishment programme within an operational hospital, significant fire-safety deficiencies were uncovered across clinical and back-of-house areas. Years of alterations, undocumented service installations, and legacy construction had compromised the building's fire strategy. Challenge Overview The hospital faced the complex task of correcting widespread passive fire protection failures while remaining fully operational, with immediate action required to restore compliance, protect vulnerable occupants, and maintain the renovation programme. Identifying Key Issues Fire barriers lacked certification and installation records, compartment lines were inconsistent or incomplete, medical gases, HVAC, electrical, and data services breached fire compartments, hidden voids concealed critical vulnerabilities, and non-compliance posed risks to patient safety and regulatory approval.

Our solution — A Fully Compliant, Audit-Ready Fire Protection Solution

Solution Implementation DefendX Fire Protection implemented a structured, healthcare-focused delivery approach designed to restore full fire integrity while maintaining safe, uninterrupted hospital operations. A comprehensive, phased assessment was carried out aligned to the hospital's fire strategy and HTM requirements, identifying, mapping, and prioritising defects across clinical areas, escape routes, risers, and plant spaces. Certified passive fire protection systems were installed within live healthcare environments, with every installation photo-documented, labelled, and digitally logged to ensure full regulatory confidence, sequenced around clinical activity and infection-control requirements.

The outcome

Results Achieved All identified fire-stopping and compartmentation defects were remediated and certified, fully aligned with the hospital's fire strategy and HTM requirements. Continuous, compliant fire and smoke barriers were reinstated, successful inspection outcomes were achieved, and patient care was maintained throughout without operational disruption. This project demonstrates DefendX Fire Protection's ability to identify, remediate, and certify complex fire-safety risks within live healthcare environments.
